Wheaton in England 2008

We will spend the summer of 2008 exploring the country of Great Britain.  After two weeks on campus (starting on June 4) to get oriented to the program, we will fly to London for a week of sightseeing, historical and literary investigation, and, of course, theater-going. Our Southwest Excursion will take us to the lovely city of Salisbury, Stonehenge, Jane Austen's Chawton home, Herbert's Bemerton Chapel, and on to Tintagel where we will visit Arthurian sites and stay overnight by the Sea.  After exploring the eighteenth-century elegance of Bath, we will travel to Oxford and set up residence at St. Anne's College. Here we will lead the life of scholars for a while -- with occasional excursions of an educational but pleasurable nature, for instance, taking in a play at Stratford-upon-Avon -- and then we will reward ourselves for our labors by beginning our journey to the beautiful Lake District of England. After a stop at Coventry Cathedral, we will soon find ourselves in the environment that inspired Wordsworth and his friends. After enjoying the lakes and hills, we will return to London and make our farewells July 29-30.  Plans are underway for next year's program. If you wish to join us or find out more information, please contact the program co-directors, Dr. Sharon Coolidge at (630)752-5782 or at Sharon.Coolidge@wheaton.edu or Dr. Leland Ryken (630) 752-5790 or Leland.Ryken@wheaton.edu.

For the Wheaton in England 2009 program, we will begin taking deposits ($500 is required to hold a place for you) in early September 2008, and will continue until the program is full.  At that point we will start a waiting list.  The program can fill up very quickly, so you should be prompt if you want a place on this exciting journey. Applications and additional information will be available in the English Department this fall semester.
