Password Requirements

  • Password must be at least 6 characters long.
  • Must have at least 1 numeral, and no more than 5.
  • Characters cannot be repeated more than 3 times in a row.
  • You may not use a password that you have previously used.

Guide to developing a secure password

  • Longer passwords are typically better than short ones (ie. at least 8 characters)
  • Passwords should not be dictionary items.
  • Passwords are stronger if they include a combination of alphabetic, numeric and non-alphanumeric characters. They are also harder to crack if they combine what appears to be a random combination of upper and lower case letters.
  • Pass phrases are better than passwords (ie., a combination of two or more words)
  • It is best to not use the same password for Novell access as you use to access the various internet resources that you might use (e.g. internet banking, e-commerce, password protected information sources). Otherwise the security of your Novell password is no better than that of the least secure site that you might access.
