Student Networking (ResNet)

What is ResNet? It is a service that provides registered students with a dedicated high-speed connection to the campus data network and the Internet. It allows residents to access the network without tying up their telephone lines.

How to sign up? ResNet service is available to any registered student. All students must attend a ResNet orientation conducted by Residence Life prior to registering on ResNet. In addition, each student must agree to abide by the "Terms and Conditions for Accounts/Usage (Acceptable Use Policy)" by signing an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) agreement form. Once these requirements are met, online registration can be completed.

Student Network Registration

When you come on campus each year, you are required to register your computer. If you would like to prepare your computer so that you are able to register quickly, please follow the steps on the preparation page.

Be sure to check our list of supported systems to be sure your computer is compatible with Wheaton's network.

Student Network Technology

The Wheaton campus network uses Ethernet technology. Students in residence halls and apartments must have a 10Mbps or 10/100Mbps Ethernet card in their computers. The College does not install these cards, so students must either buy a PC or Mac with Ethernet installed, or have someone install the card for them (all recent Macintoshes have built-in Ethernet; Windows PCs normally offer this as an optional feature). Each Residence Hall room has one 10-Base-T network jack per resident. College-owned houses contain only wireless technology which connects students to the network. Student Network Costs

Student network access is available to any registered student. As part of this service, the Computing Services Support Desk provides assistance with configuration and network problems via phone and email. Campus housing room visits by a Computing Services Support Desk technician are also available for those who have desktop computers that need to be registered.

Students may bring their computers to the Computing Services Support Desk for technical support related to network connectivity at no extra charge.

Students living off-campus

If you will be living off campus, you can register your computer to access the Student Network and have internet access to wired and wireless connections around campus, example, the Beamer Center and the Library. For other uses of campus computer systems such as printing, you will need to use the computer labs on campus.

Access to library resources via the Internet is available through your own ISP from off-campus using your Wheaton College network computer account. Your My Wheaton email account is always accessible from off-campus

Internet Filtering

Campus life at Wheaton College is governed by our Community Covenant. As an expression of this covenant the College has chosen to use an Internet filtering software program on the campus network to block access to pornography, gambling sites, and sites that provide resources for academic plagiarism.

In the event that you believe a Web site is being blocked in error, or if you find a web site that should be blocked and isn't, please notify: webfilter.administrator@wheaton.edu
